Maytag Bravos & Bravos XL Repair

The three usual suspects on a Bravos and Bravos XL are the shift actuator, the lid lock assembly, and worn rotor splines. A failed shift actuator is the #1 cause and it will usually throw an F7E5 code or simply click without engaging. The lid lock has to close and latch electronically before spin — a bad lid lock looks identical to a shift actuator failure from the user's side. Worn rotor splines (the motor-to-basket coupling) will let the motor turn while the basket stays still.

Start with a full vent cleaning — from the dryer to the outside hood. Restricted airflow blows the thermal fuse, and replacing the fuse without fixing the vent guarantees a repeat failure within weeks. If airflow is clear, test the thermal fuse, high-limit thermostat, and heating element for continuity. Gas Bravos XL models add the igniter, flame sensor, and gas valve coils. A Bravos XL that heats briefly then cools is usually the cycling thermostat or a restricted airflow issue that hasn't blown the fuse yet.

Bravos XL dryers develop squeaks from worn drum support rollers, a failing idler pulley, or a glazed belt slipping on the pulleys. Replace these parts as a kit — doing one at a time guarantees another service call within months because they share the same age and load. The drum bearing (a nylon glide at the rear of the drum) is a less common but possible source.

Unplug the dryer. Remove the top panel by taking out the screws behind the lint filter housing, lifting, and sliding forward. Remove the front panel screws and disconnect the door switch harness. Release the idler pulley tension and slip the old belt off. Thread the new belt (grooved side against the drum), loop it around the motor pulley, and re-tension the idler. Bravos XL dryers are slightly more involved than standard Maytags because of the large-drum configuration. Budget 60–90 minutes.

F7E5 is the shift actuator fault — the washer cannot confirm it has shifted between agitate and spin modes. The actuator sits on the transmission beneath the tub. Replacing it is straightforward but requires laying the machine on its back and removing the rear access panel. If the actuator is new and the code persists, the control board or the wiring harness to the actuator are the next suspects.
